Once more, a painful day draws to an end. The team just can't surpass its fear, which directly leads to an ultra-defensive attitude on the pitch. The main problem may be the lack of quality amongst the current squad, as some players clearly aren't up for the task of taking Poli to the top. One player can sustain a good level of play in a strong team, but five players can only rarely be dragged along by a finer team-mate. The match itself had very little to offer, with Grigorie, in a favorable position, aiming for the goalie and Oprea's header falling unto the post, while Popa kept a clean sheet after some great goalkeeping, with Poli Iasi having at least three good scoring opportunities.
Here's the eleven: Popa (6,5) - Emeghara (6,5), Canu (6), Mehmedovic (5,5), Radoi (5,5) - Caramarin (5), Balace (5), Izvoranu (5), Olah (5) - Cristea (5), Bucur (5) with Grigorie (5,5), Oprea (5) and Soporan coming on for Cristea, Bucur and Caramarin.
So much today, hopefully next week will be better...although I sincerely doubt it.
Poli - CFR Cluj 3-1 (0-0) (16th of September)
And yes, it's actually possible! Poli showcased some fantastic football tonight, the best we've seen for a very long time. Meating up with CFR Cluj, unbeaten after the first six rounds, was poised to be a serious challenge, but things on the pitch were quite different. Poli controlled the match from its beginning till its end, but just didn't manage to convert the dozen chances. Most notable are Cristea and Grigorie's one on ones with Turcas, both saved by the goalie born in Timisoara. The second half finally brought a well deserved goal, after a Balace corner, Grigorie converting acrobatically. Only ten minutes later, in the 60th minute, CFR received a penalty kick after a reckless challange by Alexa and the visitors drew level. Poli kept playing good football, but before adding two more goals to the tally, Popa saved well in two very uncomfortable situations. It was then time for Cartu's strike of genius: sending Plesan, Mansour and Oprea on the pitch, for Balace, Izvoranu and Cristea. All three players fought well in the remaining minutes, and Plesan actually managed to scrape up a penalty out of thin air. Grigorie shot, however, hit the post and the score remained level. It was then time for Mansour to show that he can play football: brilliant positioning and a bit of luck lead to him receiving the ball in the penalty area, which he then passed on to Oprea whose shot, slightly deflected by a defender, found the net! Just five minutes later, the same Mansour went forward with the ball and shot at goal from over twenty meters; the ball hit the post and then went into the net from Turcas' back. It was 3-1 and, finally, a well deserved victory for Poli!
Here's the eleven with the golden subs: Popa (6,5) - Emeghara (6,5), Mehmedovic (6), McKain (6,5), Olah (6) - Balace (5), Izvoranu (5,5), Alexa (6), Caramarin (6) - Grigorie (6), Cristea (5,5) and Plesan (6,5), Mansour (7), Oprea (6,5).
A positive result at Galati, on Wednesday, would definitely signal a new beginning.
Poli - Unirea Urziceni 1-0 (1-0) (23 of September)
It's been a busy week and I appologize for not reporting on the match against Otelul (lost, 0-1). That was an unfortunate loss, a game we simply gave away ourselves (with McKain scoring a spectacular own goal).
The match today was a bit of a bore, but nevertheless we garnered the well deserved three points. The only goal was scored by Mansour, in the 42. minute, after a brilliant pass from Emeghara. Poli had a few other chances, but neither Cristea, nor Plesan, nor Caramarin were able to convert them.
Today's eleven: Popa (5,5) - Emeghara (6,5), McKain (6), Mehmedovic (5,5), Radoi (5) - Balace (5), Izvoranu (5,5), Alexa (6,5), Caramarin (5,5) - Cristea (5), Mansour (6) with Plesan (6), Bucur (5) and Oprea coming on for Balace, Caramarin and Izvoranu.
So much from me...perhaps for a while to come. Cheerio!
Ceahlaul - Poli 1-2 (1-0) (29th of September)
It's never easy with Poli and today wasn't an exception. Although the match should've been rather easy, given that Ceahlaul are newly promoted, Poli needed a lot of luck to win the encounter.
The home team scored with a scorcher, in the 42nd minute, Poli having missed at least two important scoring opportunities until then. It could've been 2-0 in the 50th minute, had the linesman not seen an inexistent offside - this was, however, just fair, after the same linesman had raised the flag erroneously on two occasions in the first half, when Balace and Caramarin had good scoring chances. Ceahlaul continued to attack, showing much more determination than Poli and only Popa's good reflex saved us from conceding a second. In the 78th minute, Alexa made a great run and sent a cross into the penalty area, Oprea passing the ball to Plesan who scored easily (Mansour might have subsequently fouled Ceahlaul's goalie...). Just a few minutes later, Olah crossed a fine ball and Oprea scored with a precise header, making it an incredible 2-1! Nothing else happened, so the match ended in a victory for Poli, despite the mediocre performance. At this point, however, every victory matters, no matter how it is achieved.
The eleven: Popa (5,5) - Emeghara (6), McKain (5,5), Mehmedovic (5,5), Olah (6) - Balace (5), Alexa (6,5), Izvoranu (5,5), Caramarin (5) - Cristea (5), Mansour (5,5) with Plesan (6,5), Radoi (5,5) and Oprea (7) coming on for Balace, Caramarin and Mehmedovic.
I will be leaving tomorrow - direction university. I'm not sure whether I'll be able to keep updating the site, but I promise to do my best. Until then, Forza Viola!
